Real Recovery, Built Around Your Daily Life

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) gives you the structure, support, and clinical guidance needed to recover without stepping away from your everyday responsibilities.

At Vanguard Behavioral Health, our IOP is designed for individuals who are ready to take action while continuing to work, attend school, or care for their families.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a structured form of outpatient treatment that provides consistent therapy and clinical support several times per week.

In IOP, you will:

  • Attend treatment multiple days per week for several hours per session
  • Participate in group therapy, individual therapy, and skill-building sessions
  • Receive professional guidance without 24/7 supervision
  • Continue living at home or in a supportive environment

IOP allows you to actively work on recovery while applying what you learn in real-world situations immediately.

Who Is IOP Best For?

IOP may be the right fit if you:

  • Have completed residential treatment or PHP and need continued support
  • Do not require 24/7 supervision, but still need structure
  • Have a stable home or supportive living environment
  • Are managing mental health and/or substance use challenges
  • Want to maintain work, school, or family responsibilities while in treatment

If your situation requires a higher level of care, we can help guide you into the appropriate program.

IOP vs. PHP vs. Residential Treatment

Choosing the right level of care is critical to success:

Residential Treatment (Inpatient Rehab)

  • 24/7 care and live-in environment
  • Highest level of support

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

  • Full-day treatment with structured clinical care
  • Return home at night

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

  • Fewer weekly hours of treatment
  • Maximum flexibility with continued support

IOP is often the final structured step before full independence, helping you maintain progress while rebuilding your life.

Our Approach to IOP at Vanguard Behavioral Health

At Vanguard, we don’t believe in generic treatment plans.

Your recovery is personal, and your care should be too.

Our IOP includes:

  • Group Therapy – Build connection, accountability, and shared understanding
  • Individual Therapy – Address personal challenges and track progress
  • Relapse Prevention Planning – Identify triggers and develop coping strategies
  • Case Management – Support with life logistics, goals, and next steps
  • Medication Management – When clinically appropriate
  • Life Skills Development – Tools for stability, communication, and decision-making

We focus on helping you apply recovery in real life, not just talk about it in a room.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment in IOP

Many individuals in IOP are navigating both mental health conditions and substance use disorders.

We commonly treat:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Bipolar disorder

At Vanguard Behavioral Health, we provide integrated dual diagnosis care, ensuring both conditions are treated together, not separately.

This approach leads to stronger, more sustainable recovery outcomes.

What a Typical IOP Schedule Looks Like

While schedules vary based on your needs, most IOP programs include:

  • Several sessions per week (daytime or evening options may be available)
  • Group therapy as a core component
  • Individual sessions for personalized support
  • Ongoing progress monitoring and plan adjustments

IOP is designed to give you consistent support while gradually increasing independence.

Continue Your Recovery with Vanguard Behavioral Health

If you’re ready to take the next step but need flexibility, IOP may be the right path forward.

Mental Health and Drug Treatment in Albuquerque

The key to successful mental health or substance abuse treatment is having a unique tailored plan that is built for the individual. Vanguard assesses each person on an individual basis to get a good understanding of their needs and struggles. No matter whether an individual is dealing with mental health issues, addiction or both, we use our diverse collection of services to help them take those important steps in the right direction.

Mental Health Treatment

Disregarding your mental health is easy, even if you take good care of your physical body. However, taking care of your mind is just as important. There is no shame in needing help for mental health conditions. Sometimes, achieving a healthy mental state takes the guidance of a professional or even a team of professionals. Therapies such as intensive residential programs, one-on-one therapy or even medication may help you find a more peaceful emotional state.

Addiction Treatment

Substance abuse disorder usually means an individual is stuck in an ongoing cycle of risky behaviors and using substances that cause harm. Unfortunately, even though many people caught in addiction want to quit, the substance has such control that quitting leads to overwhelming physical and emotional distress. Adequate interventional therapy, both medical and psychological in many cases, is the only effective way to recover.

“I can’t thank the staff enough for all their help & support during my journey.”

I came to Vanguard Behavioral with the hope to find a place for me to start over. I was homeless, completely dependent on a substance, and all out of ideas on how to fix my situation. I came in not knowing what to expect, but what I found was a full support team of professionals who really do care about the client. I can’t say enough good things about them….

…I can’t thank the staff enough for all their help and support during my journey. I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am without their support and care.

“Vanguard saves lives and families.”

Heaven sent .. Those are the words to describe this amazing place Vanguard .. It’s one of the most difficult times in someone’s family when you can’t seem to find the right place to help .. Words can’t explain the appreciation our family has for saving our niece and empowering her to believe in herself and guide and treat ones addiction.. Vanguard restored our faith in humanity .. The way they helped and positioned my niece to push through all obstacles was simply amazing.. if you or a family member needs support . Look no further, Vanguard saves lives and families.. Thank you for what you do, and thank you for re storing our faith in human care, You’re truly a blessing!

“The most effective & compassionate rehab in the state of New Mexico.”

Vanguard is by far the most effective and compassionate rehab in the state of New Mexico. My experience here has changed my life forever for the better. I now have a job at top golf and I’m moving into an apartment and that is directly a result of all of the work that the clinicians and the staff did with my on my mental health and my drug addiction. I spent 90 days here at Vanguard and God has blessed me in so many ways. I want to thank all of the staff for everything they have accomplished in helping people leave their substance use behind.
