Choosing The Right Rehab

The first step in overcoming mental health challenges with substance abuse is choosing to seek treatment. However, the next step is just as important: choosing the best place for treatment.

Every individual’s needs can look different when it comes to rehabilitation, and what works best during treatment for one individual may not work best for another. Choosing the most fitting place could make all the difference in treatment outcomes. Something as simple as the wrong location or lack of aftercare options could be a stumbling block to achieving your goals.

Take a look at how to choose a rehab facility that’s best for you.

How to Choose a Rehab Center: Factors to Consider

The most effective rehab facility can look much different to each individual. Choosing the right place should be a highly personalized process rooted in your personal goals and needs. Here are the most important factors to consider as you evaluate rehab options for mental health or addiction treatment.

Location

Geographic location is undoubtedly an essential factor when choosing a rehab facility. Most individuals prefer treatment close to home for the sake of convenience and to be close to family.

However, there are also cases in which an individual chooses treatment out of town. For example, if you are looking to distance yourself from familiar environments or people, longer-distance locations may be more suitable.

Your Personal Goals and Needs

What do you want to achieve during treatment? While the big-picture goal may be to achieve long-term sobriety or mental wellness, you likely have smaller underlying goals as well. For example, a program that allows family visits or therapy would be most fitting if you want support to reconnect with your family through your recovery process.

Treatment and Therapy Type Availability

A number of evidence-based therapy options may be offered by different rehab centers. A few examples include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Likewise, if you have more than one issue to be addressed — such as co-occurring substance abuse and depression — you may need a facility that offers dual-diagnosis treatment.

Group Therapy and One-on-One Therapy

Group therapy and one-on-one therapy are beneficial during rehabilitation. However, some facilities may offer more group therapy than one-on-one sessions, while others have a healthy balance of both or offer options according to the needs of the client.

Insurance and Cost

Rehab cost varies significantly depending on the location, the type of programs offered, amenities and more. For many individuals, the cost is one of the biggest deciding factors when it comes to choosing a specific facility.

Thankfully, many programs are now covered on some level by health insurance. When evaluating different places, ask about insurance and funding options. You may also be able to cover costs using private funding or loans.

Family Participation and Visitors

Some rehab facilities involve family and loved ones during the recovery process. They may offer periodic family therapy sessions or programs that allow you to work toward family visits.

However, this is not the same at every facility. Some have more significant restrictions when it comes to outside contact during treatment. If you feel this would hinder your progress or commitment to a rehab program, be sure to find out what a specific facility offers.

Aftercare or Long-Term Support

While initial rehab and therapy can help you achieve your goals, ongoing therapeutic options can be extremely important to maintaining that success. Some facilities have excellent aftercare and long-term support programs once an individual has completed treatment.

For example, at Vanguard, we offer outpatient treatment and transitional housing. This can help our clients take smaller steps from a residential level of care, rather than slipping right back into life without adequate support.

Staff Qualifications and Facility Accreditations

Find out about the qualifications of the staff to address your needs as a client. For instance, some facilities have licensed behavioral therapists and health care professionals on staff, while some may not.

Accreditations are also important. Make sure the rehab facility is accredited by the Joint Commission for Behavioral Health. Also, look for necessary accreditations set forth by the state.
