What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a common mental health disorder characterized by persistent feelings of worry, nervousness, or fear that are disproportionate to the situation at hand. While some level of anxiety is a normal part of life, individuals with anxiety disorders experience heightened and prolonged anxiety that can interfere with daily functioning, relationships, and overall well-being.
Anxiety often manifests as physical symptoms, such as increased heart rate, sweating, and restlessness. It can also affect a person’s mental clarity and decision-making abilities. Anxiety disorders can range from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) to more specific forms like social anxiety or panic disorder.
In addiction recovery, anxiety can be both a contributing factor to substance abuse and a condition that individuals may struggle with in sobriety. Treatment for anxiety typically involves therapy, lifestyle changes, and sometimes medication to help individuals manage their symptoms and reduce their stress levels.
